Chrysopsis mariana - Maryland goldenaster
Chrysopsis mariana - Maryland goldenaster
Life Cycle: Perennial
Soil Moisture: Dry to moist, well draining sandy soil
Sun Exposure: Full sun to minimal high pine shade
Height: 18”-2’ when blooming
Bloom Color: Yellow
Bloom Time: Spring through fall, mostly fall
Fauna: Butterflies and native bees are attracted to the plants nectar. Seeds are food for birds.
Planting Considerations: Maryland goldenaster is a favorite for a mixed wildflower habitat. Its basal leaves are mostly evergreen and slowly spread outward somewhat, giving it good ground covering ability. It blooms mostly in the fall and is especially attractive when mixed with blazing stars (Liatris sp.) and fall blooming grasses like piney woods dropseed (Sporobolus junceus).
Field Notes: Leaves are hairy for a time before the plant blooms. Spent seed heads turn into beautiful golden globes and add lots of interest to a planting as well as food for birds.
