Soil Moisture: Somewhat dry, medium to moist sandy or loamy soil

Bloom Color: Maroonish black 

Bloom Time: Late summer, early fall 

Fauna: Attracts a wide variety of butterflies and other pollinators 

Planting Considerations: A favorite to add to a mixed wildflower planting.  Dark blooms add a lot of interest and contrast. 

Field Notes: Blackish maroon blooms sit on top of long, lime green leafless stems. Most commonly this wildflower lacks typical petals but rarely it will have a few yellow ones. Rough, hairy basal leaves hug the ground.
